Alice L. Walton, the Wal-Mart heiress whose family foundation bought a coveted Asher B. Durand landscape from the New York Public Library this week for more than $35 million, has been a quiet but significant presence in the field of American art for 15 years.

Slowly and methodically, Ms. Walton has paid top dollar at auction and through dealers for the best paintings, drawings and sculptures she can find by artists like Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, George Bellows, Marsden Hartley and Charles Willson Peale. The goal, the family foundation says, is to start a museum in Bentonville, Ark., where her father, Sam Walton, opened his first retail store in 1951.

“Bentonville is where her family is from,” said Dara Mitchell, director of Sotheby’s American paintings department, who oversaw the sale of the Durand through a sealed-bid auction on Thursday and has advised Ms. Walton on some acquisitions. Bentonville is still the site of Wal-Mart’s headquarters.

What distinguishes Ms. Walton from many other vastly wealthy collectors is that she carefully does her homework, curators and dealers say.

“She is more personally involved than your stereotypical rich person,” said Jane Meyers, a senior curator at the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, to which Ms. Walton has lent a Peale portrait of George Washington that she bought at Christie’s for $6.2 million. “She has a very good eye and undertakes the research herself. She asks astute questions.”
