How to Treat Baby Acne
March 31st, 2009
Did you know that there is such a thing as baby acne? Actually it is more common than you might think. Many newborns show signs of acne within two weeks of birth. This doesn’t mean that your baby will have blemishes forever; it just needs to be recognized and treated.
Baby acne is one of the most difficult forms to understand. Many scientists still do not know the answer to why your newborn gets blemished skin. Some believe that the hormones received by the mother at birth could be the cause of baby acne. Others believe that medications that the mother is taking while breastfeeding might be the reason. Unfortunately there is no right or wrong answer as to what gives your newborn acne, but there are ways to help prevent and treat it.
There may be no clear answer as to why newborn acne develops, but there are a few ways to help relieve this problem. Be sure to use mild detergents that have been washed thoroughly. This is to prevent irritation. A baby’s skin is much more sensitive to strong detergents than ours and may cause the acne to worsen or even cause a rash. Be sure to clean any milk or food from your baby’s face gently. Just like with adults, baby acne does not get better if you try to scrub it away. A baby is easily scarred from the smaller things, and acne is no exception, so please do not try to scrub your baby’s face. These preventative methods are the best acne baby treatment.
Sometimes the best answer for how to treat baby acne is simple…have patience. Many newborns will close their pimples within two weeks, perhaps a little longer. It is vital that you keep you baby’s face clean and to not apply moisturizer or any other acne treatment medications that you have used for yourself. These types of medications are much too strong and can cause irritation to an infant’s skin.
Many people may be concerned at first sight of the rash-like appearance. You may even be tempted to take your baby to the doctor to find an acne baby treatment. The reality is that there really isn’t any medication for blemishes that is safe for using on a baby’s delicate skin.
If you have kept your child clean and laundered their clothes and blankets properly and the problem hasn’t gotten better, then it may be something else. There are many different types of skin rashes that are more predominant in babies than in adults, which means if it doesn’t look like tiny pimples, then it is best to get it checked by a doctor just to be safe.
You may be concerned about how to treat baby acne, but the only medicine is patience and cleanliness. An acne baby treatment more than likely will never be prescribed because as of today, there isn’t a market for such medications. Baby acne may be a nuisance, but it will most certainly go away within a few weeks.

Baby and Toddler - Feeding Your Kids Right
March 31st, 2009
Parents always seem to know what is best for their kids to eat. Kids, however are the best judges of how much they should eat. Positive encounters with food at all ages will set the stage for sensible eating habits throughout their life. With a few tips for preventing food hassles, your child will grow up with sensible food habits.
There are a few important feeding jobs for parents starting with offering a variety of healthy and tasty foods. Be regular when serving meals and snacks and make meal time pleasant. Teach good manners and always set a good example. Using the tips mentioned above will pave the way for pleasant mealtime in the future.
There are several different types of eaters. We have the “food jaggers”, the “food strikers”, the “TV eaters”, the “complainer”, the “fear of new foods” kid, and the “great American white food diet” kid. There are a few ways to handle these kinds of obstacles. For the “food jaggers”, the kids, who eat one and only one food, allow them to eat what everthey want. Provided that what they like is wholesome. Do offer other foods at every meal along with their “jag” food. Food jags rarely last long enough to do any harm.
Then you have the “food strikers”, the kid who refuses to eat what is served which can unfortunately lead to “short order cook syndrome” for you. Make sure you have breads, rolls or fruit available at each meal. That way there are usually more choices that the child likes. Be very supportive and don’t be afraid to let the child go hungry if they won’t eat what is served. Which is worse, a child who occasionally skips a meal or a parent who is perpetually a short order cook?
The “TV eaters” are the kids who always want to watch TV while they are eating. Turn off the TV. Having the TV on is a distraction that prevents the whole family from interacting and bonding. Often times dinner is the only time families share together, so take advantage of it. An occasional meal in front of the TV that the whole family can enjoy is fine.
The “complainer” whines or complains about the food being served. First encourage your child to try other things that are being served. If they continue to disrupt mealtime ask them to leave until the meal is finished. Do not allow them to come back for dessert or let them eat what they like before the next meal is served.
The one who “fears new foods” is the one who refuses to try anything new. Continue to introduce and reinforce new foods. It may take many times seeing this food before they try it and many more before they like it. Do not force them.
A lot of kids fall into the category of the “great American white food” diet. These kids only eat potatoes, macaroni and milk. Again, avoid pressuring them to eat new foods; giving attention to picky eaters only reinforces a child’s demand to limit foods. Continue to offer a variety of other food groups and encourage them to try them; eventually they will move on to try other things.
Try these simple tips to make mealtimes a more pleasant experience.

Elimination Communication aka Potty Talk
March 29th, 2009
No, not that kind of potty talk. That’s another topic altogether! I’m talking about Elimination Communication (EC), a new word given to an ancient practice: raising baby without diapers. E.C. is also referred to as Natural Infant Hygiene.
When I first heard about Elimination Communication, my second child was about 8 months old. The concept intrigued me. I knew that women around the world did not use diapers, and though they wore their babies on their bodies, they didn’t get wet on. They simply tuned in to their baby’s cues and at the right time, held baby out over a bush and let nature take its course. I decided to try it with my son. I was tickled pink when I sat him on a little potty and he went, right on cue. It’s like he knew exactly what to do.
The party line of modern child rearing experts is that baby has no control over his sphincter muscles until around 18 months, but I didn’t believe that. I noticed with my kids that they would wake up dry every morning from the time they were around 7 months old or so (and I use cloth diapers so I knew the diaper was dry). Besides, babies all over the world don’t read books by American parenting experts!
My “EC babies”, at 9 months of age, used the potty for almost all of their eliminations. They rarely wore diapers (only when we went out, sometimes not even then) and instead wore either training pants or little underwear. Early potty training (as young as 15- 24 months) is a side effect of EC but it’s not really the goal. The goal is communication. If you put diapers on the baby from the time he is newborn, he’s effectively being trained to “go” in a diaper. He’s being “diaper trained.”
EC babies do have accidents. Sometimes, during a developmental leap (crawling, walking), babies take a break from cueing their parents when they need to go. They’re just too busy to be bothered.
But since they don’t become accustomed to the feel of waste on their skin, finishing to potty independence is easy. They don’t really have to be trained as toddlers because they already prefer the potty. It’s not scary, neither do they have to be coerced, bribed, etc as often happens with conventionally trained toddlers.
Elimination Communication is just another option for parents. The thing I love about it is that it proves that babies are so much smarter than we give them credit for. Just as it was fascinating and almost unbelievable the first time you saw a baby signing to its parents (whether that baby was yours or someone else’s), it’s also really cool to see a baby clearly communicating their elimination needs. For example, when my youngest baby is playing happily on the floor, then crawls up to me quickly and starts fussing, I sit her on the potty and she poops. Instead of struggling with an unhappy, squirmy baby during diaper changes, her needs are met in a more hygienic way, quickly and easily, with respect for her dignity.
For those who are interested in learning more, a non profit organization called DiaperFreeBaby.org has appeared on the scene to give information and support. There is also a wonderful book called Diaper Free! by Ingrid Bauer that tells you how to get started with the practice, stories from parents and practical tips.
Now regarding potty talk, if anyone knows the secret to getting your 5 year old son to stop communicating about eliminating, I’m all ears.

Salmon Fishing
March 28th, 2009
Where to fish for salmon or the Chinook or the king salmon. The pacific salmon range from California to Alaska. These anadromous species can be found in most pacific coastal waters, streams and rivers that have a good flow of water and temperature as well as a suitable habitat for going up to spawn. You will find that they may be as many as three spawns per year, spring ,summer, fall.
The average size of the Chinook can be from 16 to 20 lb. but you will see larger fish up to 55 lb. taken from the remote areas along the pacific coast .From BC Alaska you can catch the largest or the Chinook. Fish up to 65 lb. which are common have been taken from the coastal areas.
The Chinook will return to the river in which they spawned from at the age of 2 to 7 years old. The salmon will travel over 7000 miles at sea to return to its spawning grounds. One of the longest river spawns is the 2000 miles battle up the Yukon River located in the state of Alaska.
With the advancement of man a lot of the smaller streams have been choked of with pollution and silt from local construction. Some of the streams have been filled in for housing and commercial use. There has been a increase of volunteers to clean up the streams and repair the gravel spawning grounds. With some success the salmon have slowly been returning to these devastated areas.
The salmon use solar navigation ,smell, day light and rain fall to help guide them to the spawning grounds. Most need a gravel bed of course gravel to spawn in. The female will dig out a spot and lay her eggs and the male will fertilize the eggs with jets of milt. Both fish die with in days of spawning.
The spawning fish feed many bears ,bird like the eagles and people on the run up to their spawning grounds. The decaying fish supply food for the river or stream organisms which provide food for the fry after the hatch. The fry will spend up to 18 months in the river and stream systems before heading out to sea to repeat the process all over
Before you fish for salmon you will need to check the regulations in the area you are planning to fish in every area will have different regulations. Time to fish size limits and the number of the fish you may keep. State and Provincial Regulations must be followed as the fines can be very large if you get caught fishing with out the proper license or are out of season. Always check with the regulatory body for the area you will be fishing in. Better to have what you need than to lose a boat or vehicle or go to jail.
If fishing in early spring or late summer or in the fall be aware that you may see bears of all sizes after all you are fishing in their favorite spot. Give them a wide berth they are hungry and will protect their territory. Better to play safe than to have a bad encounter you will lose if you come into contact with a bear.
Trolling from a boat will help you avoid the bears. The down rigger is very popular to get the bait down to the level to which the salmon are at. Trolling depth will vary from 10 ft to 150 ft a lead cannon ball from 2 to 10 lb. will be used .Hootches , and anchovies work in most location best to check with the local guides to find out what is working on the given days you are fishing.
No matter what you fish with or which method you use a Chinook salmon will give you a fight you will not soon forget.

Anti-Aging Treatment: Don’t Ignore the First Signs
It is inevitable that everybody faces a time when the use of anti-aging treatment products becomes the most viable option. As people age, it is impossible to conceal the fact that there are implications of aging, specifically when it comes to outer aspect of the body. The skin sags, develops lines, shows wrinkles, and becomes unattractive. Coincidentally, the first signs of aging start as early as on your late 20’s, or if lucky, at 30’s or 40’s.
While for most people the use of anti-aging treatment comes during or between these times, it is more advisable that they use it even before there are signs showing. More beauty experts insist that doing so inhibits the early formation of aging signs such as crow’s feet, laughter lines, fine lines, and sagging skin. By keeping a certain routine application of anti-aging treatment, it is also maintaining the youth in your skin, and more importantly, keeps it healthy; thus, delaying the aging effect as long as possible.
Don’t Ignore First Signs of Aging
Most women ignore the appearance of the very first fine wrinkle lines. This is not advisable. Denial can be your worst possible action when this time comes in your life. As early as the first wrinkle lines appearance, it is recommended that it is fixed. Otherwise it can materialize into something more serious which most likely will need more complicated type of treatment. Selecting and applying of the right anti-aging treatment cream should help remove these lines and inhibit more lines from forming.
