Every parent of a newborn will inevitably deal with many sleepless nights. Babies, of course, have many needs, and when they awake in the night they will cry for their mothers.

One of your most important tasks as a parent is to establish good sleeping habits in your child. Every baby must go through a transition where he adjusts from sleeping with his mother to sleeping on his own.

This is a natural transition of course, and takes some time, but there are things you can do to expedite the process. Not only will this help your child develop better sleep habits, it will allow you to get some much needed rest.

If your child does wake up in the night for a feeding, try to get him to do one full feeding the first time he wakes up. If you don’t do this, you encourage him to “snack” throughout the night - i.e. wake you up every couple hours.

Again, it is important to understand these baby feeding tips should not be taken as hard and fast rules, but rather as guidance. In a general way, you want to create both daytime and sleep associations for your child.

You want him to associate feeding and play with something that happens during the day, and lullabies and baths as something that happens at night, before bed.

By doing this you ease the transition between sleep and wakefulness, which is the ultimate goal in terms of putting your child to bed easily. If, however, your child doesn’t want to feed every three hours, don’t force him.

Similarly, don’t force a full feeding when you wake him at night.

Rather, think of the bigger picture: by creating general habits and associations for your child, you will ensure a hasty and healthy sleep development.

Organizating a baby shower party can be a very tedious task. You’ll first need to

Usually, the designs and shapes of baby shower cakes are nursery items. These are

appreciate it if there is already a stack of diapers prepared for the baby.

To prepare a diaper cake, all you need to do is carefully stack rolled diapers into
several levels (having three levels is suggested). You may use laces and ribbons to
keep the diapers in place. However, make sure that you did not tie the diapers too
tightly together to prevent them from being deformed. Deformed diapers will be
useless and will just end up in the garbage bin.

The diaper cake can also be placed as a table centerpiece. If you still prefer to have
a real cake for the baby shower, you can bake or order a simple cake from the
bakeshop.

After preparing the table centerpiece, you’ll need to combine it with good baby
shower food. Most of the time snacks, tea, desserts and punches are served. You
can also have some barbecues and grilled foods, in case you have invited some male
guests. The dads can bond and have some conversation while attending to the
grills. This way, everyone can participate in welcoming the new member of the
family.

RCLI: how is it different to official measures?

The Real Cost of Living Index aims to give a realistic weighting to the essential costs of living, which The Telegraph says “provides a more realistic picture of costs faced by hard-working families”. In particular, this includes housing (i.e. mortgage/rent), groceries, utilities, transport and taxes.

The current RCLI rate of inflation has been measured at 9.5% - over three times the official inflation rate of 3%.

To date, the Government have relied on the CPI (Consumer Price Index) and RPI (Retail Price Index) measures of inflation. Both measure the change in prices of a vast range of goods and services (known as the ‘basket of goods and services’), intended to represent the average buying habits of the British public.

There’s a problem with this method: for your own rise in costs to mirror inflation, you would have to buy everything in the Government’s ‘basket’, in the right quantities. In reality, each individual is only likely to buy some of these.

Considering that a reasonable proportion of household spending is taken up by groceries - of which The Telegraph reported a 23% yearly rise in average prices - it could be argued that the 3% inflation rate proves that CPI doesn’t give a clear enough picture of how or where prices are rising.

The British Crime Survey for 2006/07 shows that there were just under 400,000 threats of workplace violence and nearly 300,000 actual assaults on British workers by members of the public.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said that these figures may be the tip of the iceberg as most incidents possibly go unreported. In addition, the phenomenon known as ‘work rage’ continues to grow unchecked.

They say that many areas of workplace misconduct such as bullying and more specifically any act of violence should be treated under the category of gross misconduct.

Oral thrush is an infection caused by the yeast fungus known as Candida albicans and is a common illness in newborn babies. The fungus is also referred to as candidosis and moniliasis, but generally these terms describe the appearance of candida albicans in adults. This article will focus on the causes and symptoms of oral thrush in newborns as well as methods of treatment.

It may be helpful to first understand some background information on exactly what oral thrush is. Microorganisms exist everywhere in our environment and usually bacteria, viruses and fungi form a symbiotic relationship with the human body. These microorganisms are beneficial to the health of babies and adults alike and the body allows them to remain present. The fungus that causes oral thrush does not have a symbiotic relationship with the human body. Candida albicans usually works its way into the body when the immune system is in a diseased or weakened state. In their first few days of life, newborn babies are especially at risk from infections such as oral thrush.

Two specific causes of oral thrush are a reaction to antibiotics and transmission from a mother with a yeast infection. The mouth of a postnatal baby undergoes certain changes following a dose of antibiotic medication that create a breeding ground for a fungus to develop. It is also possible for a mother to pass on a yeast infection to her child in the form of candidosis. The transmission occurs from exposure in the birth canal and oftentimes results in infection when the baby is from two to ten weeks old.

Diagnosing babies is usually done using the clinical picture. This means that doctors are generally able to diagnose the infection on sight alone. Oral thrush manifests itself in the form of painful white lesions on the inside of the baby’s mouth. These patches appear on the gums, insides of cheeks, palates and tongue. It is also possible for thrush lesions to work their way into the esophagus. Doctors use throat cultures, endoscopic examination and barium swallow to help diagnose an oral thrush infection that has progressed to this degree.

Nipple damage due to breastfeeding can lead to an elevated risk of Candida infection. Although the nipples and areola may not show signs of an infection certain symptoms can help indicate that one is occurring. One or both nipples may be experience stinging pain or itching. Visible signs that a mother has a Candida infection include nipples with white dots, a skin rash with small fluid filled blisters, swelling and cracking of the skin.

If a doctor has reason to believe that an infant has oral thrush, he or she may send a cell sample from the baby’s tongue to a lab for analysis and confirmation. The use of a lab sample can help ensure that there are no other illnesses causing complicating a thrush infection.

When oral thrush or a yeast infection has been diagnosed, both the mother and her baby should be treated simultaneously. Coordinating care for both the mother and child helps avoid the risk of the infection being passed back and forth.

Medications for yeast can be systemic (internal) or topical (external). Often physicians will begin curing a yeast infection with a topical drug, followed by a more powerful systemic if necessary. Fluconazole is antifungal cream used to treat a mother’s breasts that have come into contact with a baby experiencing oral thrush. Some examples of commercially available anti-fungal drugs include Nystatin, Lotrimin and Itraconazola. The risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, is dramatically lower among infants who are given pacifiers while they sleep, according to new research conducted by Kaiser Permanente and the National Institutes of Health. The findings are published in the British Medical Journal.

SIDS is the leading cause of death among infants between the ages of one month and one year, claiming between 2,300 and 2,500 lives every year in the United States.

Other Risk Factors

For the latest study, investigators analyzed 185 cases of babies who died from SIDS in 10 Northern California counties and Los Angeles County from 1997 to 2000. They compared the SIDS infants to 312 normal infants of a similar age and from similar socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds.

“Pacifier use has been linked to lower rates of SIDS for some time, but this is the first study to examine this relationship comprehensively and in the context of its interaction with other risk factors for SIDS,” says lead researcher De-Kun Li, MD, PhD, of Kaiser Permanente’s Division of Research in Oakland.

The protective effect of the pacifier seemed evident even for those infants who were in an adverse sleep environment, such as sleeping face down or on the side, sleeping with a mother who smoked, or sleeping on soft bedding, the researchers found.

Another Strategy

Pacifiers may help protect an infant because the bulky handle stops the baby from accidentally suffocating in heavy blankets or soft bedding, says Li. Also, the pacifier handle may alter an infant’s sleep environment by changing the configuration of the airway passage surrounding the nose and mouth, he notes.

In the early 1990s, a broad campaign urging parents to put their babies to sleep on their backs helped reduce the number of SIDS deaths by more than 50 percent.

“We believe that pacifier use may be another strategy for further reducing the risk of SIDS,” says Diana B. Petitti, MD, MPH, the lead researcher for Kaiser Permanente’s Southern California study site, the Department of Research and Evaluation in Pasadena.
