Shopping in South Korea: What You Can Consider Buying
July 23rd, 2008
We were extremely excited when we touched down at the Incheon International Airport. I had done lots of research on South Korea and brought with me the shopping list that I had prepared earlier. No items to be sparred, we were determined to make this trip a fulfilling one!
Although we had constantly reminded ourselves to be gentle with our pockets, we arrived home with bags of Korean specialties. We did a great deal of shopping in Seoul and Jeju Island, fully utilising every compartment of our luggage bags to make rooms for the things that we bought. Like Singapore, South Korea is a good place to shop. If you are visiting South Korea, here are my recommendations.
– Korean Ginseng –
An expensive and nourishing herb, Korean Ginseng is widely known for balancing the “chi” in the body, good for the overall well-being of the body. I got to know from the sales assistant that Korean Ginseng is also effective in relieving menstrual cramps in women. Grown in the mountains, Korean Ginsengs between four to six years old are harvested and sold. The older the Korean Ginseng, the higher the price it demands.
Besides the normal “white” Korean Ginseng that I have mentioned earlier, you will also be able to find what is known as the Red Ginseng in South Korea. The Red Ginseng is prepared by treating “white” Korean Ginseng in Chinese herbs, giving it a red colour. It is known to be effective in treating erectile dysfunction in men.
Apart from being the main ingredients for many of the Korean cuisines such as the Ginseng Chicken, Korean Ginseng can be taken on its own in small slices or in the form of powder. As Korean Ginseng tastes a little bitter, you may want to consider buying honey coated Korean Ginsengs. The sweetness of honey helps to curb the bitterness of the Korean Ginseng a great deal.
If you find Korean Ginseng too expensive, Korean Ginseng products such as ginseng candies and rice cakes are good and affordable alternatives. Korean Ginseng and ginseng products can be found in many shops in Seoul.
– Amethyst –
We visited an amethyst shop in Seoul. Amethyst is a gemstone that is purple in colour and many women’s favourite. I was amazed by the Korean’s creativity and brilliant workmanship in jewelleries. Amongst the beautiful pieces of amethyst jewelleries, I came across an amethyst bracelet that could be folded into a four-leaved clover pendant! You should see the “WOW” written all over my face! Amazing!
We were told by the sales assistant that amethysts come in two grades - Grade A and B. Grade A amethysts are darker in colour and more expensive while Grade B amethysts are less expensive but in a lighter purple. Drop some hints to your partner. You might just get yourself an amethyst bracelet as your birthday present!
– Honey –
Honey is good at soothing any discomforts caused by a sore throat. Should you be visiting the Jeju Folk Village, buy yourself a few jars of honey, a perfect gift for everyone back home! Here is a trick that you might want to try. Scoop two tablespoons of Korean Honey into a bowl, followed by some water. Gently sway (not shake) the bowl, allowing the excess honey to stay at the base. Notice that polygons of the same sizes, similar to the cells in a beehive, start to appear in the honey!
– Kimchi –
Kimchis are fermented vegetables served in every Korean meal. They are made of vegetables such as cabbage, cucumber and radish. Red, hot spices are applied onto the vegetables and kept for fermentation in big jars. Extremely hot and sour, kimchi is a delicacy in Korean cuisine. Kimchi comes in airtight packets and can be found in all supermarkets in South Korea. In order not to cause your fridge to stink, make sure you keep the kimchi in airtight containers after you have removed it from its packaging.
There are simply too many things to try out in South Korea, and it is impossible for me to cover all of them here. If you like shopping and planning to go for a vacation, visit South Korea! I can assure you that you will shop till you drop!

Real Estate Is Your Friend, Invest in It
July 22nd, 2008
Hear the term “Real Estate Investing” and the typical person probably imagines some Herculean figure who has tons of cash, guts, or both. The truth is real estate is blown way out of proportion for some in terms of its sheer mystique. The bottom line is real estate is the number 1 way for the average Joe and Jane to add to their bottom line in a big way.
The first thing you should do is think differently. Instead of looking at someone like Donald Trump and say, “Wow, I can never be as smart as that guy.” Transform your mind to say “What do I need to learn and do to achieve the levels of success in real estate that I deserve!” Don’t be a lemming (that’s what got you in the financial rut in the first place!) by using the same exact words. Feel free to carve your own personality from that same bold statement.
Oh man, do I really have to go to the library as well as go meet people. Yes! Real estate is a people business. And knowledge will help make you more effective in working with people in the context of the business you select. You can start by joining a real estate club with like minded individuals. Look around, what are they investing in? Chances are, it’s in residential properties. And if you speak with some of them, you will realize not all of them were millionaires to start off with.
Owning a residential property can be a good first step because it allows you to gain appreciation in value over time, which thereby increases your net worth as well. Your ability to leverage that value increases as well via methods such as refinancing which can provide additional investment capital for you.
Overcoming the mindset of negativity or impossibility in investing in real estate is the first step. If you decide you want to build long term wealth, and feel real estate is a good place to invest in, and then keep at it, and it’s only a matter of time and effort before you become one of those Herculean figures that everyone feels daunted by. Perhaps you can educate them on the reality then.

Planning a website to market your home based business part2
July 20th, 2008
Hello again!! In part1 of this article I covered defining the purpose of your website and planning it on paper.
In this second part I will cover designing the page elements of your site. The look and feel of a site is very important, and it must convey what your site is about.
A site for an artist would be a lot different in style to a site selling electrical goods.
Having planned your site already on paper you know where you want the page elements to go, but now you must give some thought to their design. What will they look like? Do you want a simple background to your page or do you want something a bit different?
One of the most important things to consider is the download time of a page. Most people won’t want to hang around while complicated large graphics slow down the time it takes for them to view your site.
Keep the background simple. White of a very pale colour with dark text is best. If you do want an image don’t go for anything complex or large. Make the image file size as small as possible and make it very pale so that you can easily read the type over the top. Don’t make the background image fight against the text!!
Typeface Only use one typeface in your website. Just decide on a typeface and stick to it.
Text Just use a normal size type for the main text on your page. The page heading should be a larger size and maybe in bold as well. Use a dark text on a light coloured background. Reading text on a computer screen is always harder on the eyes. Most people wouldn’t appreciate red text on a green background!! They would probably leave your page very quickly.
Break the page up with lots of headings and small clumps of text. People read differently on a computer screen in comparison to reading a book or a paper. They tend to scan a page looking for interesting bits of information that stand out.
If you want to highlight any words that are very important either use bold or a second colour. Don’t underline text as it will look like a link.
Navigation The main navigation bar is usually on the left of the page or under the header.
Make the main navigation bar consistent throughout the site and give it plenty of space so that it’s easily seen.
Don’t use large graphics for navigation buttons as it makes the page slow to download. Rollover buttons can look good but make sure that the graphics are optimised first so that they are as small as possible.
Debabblizer is great for optimising images and supports many different file types. http://www.equilibrium.com/Internet/Equil/Products/DeBabelizer/in dex.htm
If you don’t know how to create rollover buttons they are very simple and just require two small images both of which are the same size. Make sure that both graphics are in the same directory and name them image1.gif and image2.gif
Here is a tutorial that you may find useful, it shows you how to build rollover buttons using javascript. You don’t need any knowledge of programing. http://www.p5interactive.com/home2/rolltut/roloverl.html
A good graphics program which is inexpensive and capable of doing lots of things with graphics is Paint Shop Pro. Download it from here at just $99 and get $75 free software http://www.digitalriver.com/dr/v2/ec_MAIN.Entry17c?CID=86740&SID= 5152&SP=10007&PN=5&PID=534751&DSP=&CUR=840&PGRP=0&CACHE_ID=86740 You can create images using it’s advanced drawing tools or import your own.
Also if you use graphics make sure that you use alt tags with descriptions. this is a good idea as if the buttons take a few seconds to download the alt tag will appear first. It’s also good for the visually impaired.
If you use plain text links in your navigation bar instead of just giving the page name e.g. “blue widgets”, make it more interesting encouraging visitors to click on the link. e.g. “For an outstanding, hard wearing blue widget click here”
Logo Design a logo for your site. This will appear at the top of every page in your site. Keep it simple and make sure that the image doesn’t take more than a couple of seconds to download. Design it on paper first and then create it using a graphics program.
Building a website isn’t difficult. Knowing what your site is about, carefull planning,(maybe some basic knowledge of HTML) and some software is really all you need. There are also many tutorials and articles on the internet which can help.

5 Killer Steps to avoid Credit Card SCAMS!
July 14th, 2008
In August, 2004, the Federal Trade Commission issued their findings of a recent study, which showed that nearly 25 million adults were victims of fraud.
Now, most importantly, If you are a victim of fraud, please do not feel like you did anything wrong. It happens to all of us at one point or another, as the FTC’s study clearly shows. Everyone likes a magic trick, and none of us are fully capable of noticing the con-artists’ slight of hand. So, if you’re a victim, take a deep breath. You’re normal.
But, there’s an old saying that goes something like this: Fool me once, shame on you…Fool me twice, shame on me!”
Here are 5 KILLER STEPS to protect yourself from Credit Card SCAMS!
- NATIONAL NO-CALL REGISTRY.
- TELEPHONE SOLICITATION
- 1-900 NUMBERS.
- ANNUAL FEES, INTEREST RATES, ETC.
- THE UNITED STATES FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION
1. NATIONAL NO-CALL REGISTRY:
There’s nothing more annoying then those credit card offers that you get over the phone. I don’t know about you, but the last thing I want to be doing, while having dinner with my 1 year old daughter and my beautiful wife, is to be annoyed by phone calls from solicitors that just want to make money off me. Legitimate or not, these calls are a nuisance. If you’re like me, and you would rather live without dealing with these calls, then go do this:
- The FTC has created the National Do-NOT-CALL registry. Go find out more information about it. The website is: http://www.donotcall.gov
- If it makes sense, complete the online form.
- Take a deep breath, and relax. Within 30 days, the list will start working for you. I can personally attest that, while the solicitations have not stopped completely, they have significantly, significantly decreased.
Join the FTC No-CALL-Registry, and enjoy a reduction in telephone solicitation phone calls.
2. TELEPHONE SOLICITATION:
Believe it or not, the vast majority of lenders out there are legitimate. Also, believe it or not, a lot of these lenders utilize telemarketing as a method of reaching out to potential customers.
- But beware of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Legitimate Lenders never ask for a processing fee in order to complete your application (this does not include appraisals during a real estate transaction in Escrow…We are discussing credit cards here).
- Keep your personal information to yourself! Don’t give out bank information, credit card numbers, social security numbers, etc., to someone you don’t know, on a telephone call. Use your common sense.
- If you don’t have the offer in hand, or confirmed in writing, then don’t pay. This is fraud. Who is this person on the phone anyway? Get their phone number, their address, their federal tax ID number, and then tell them you’ll call back. If they’re legitimate, they’ll give it to you. If you question them, then I say trust your instincts. You’re probably right on target.
Who is this on the phone? Don’t trust people you haven’t had a chance to get to know. Don’t let one enticing offer on a phone call, be your guide…
3. 1-900 NUMBERS:
A 1-900 number is, of course, a phone number that charges the caller per minute for making the call. Whether it’s a 1-900 number, or a future manifestation of the same type of telephone service, be wary of doing business this way.
- The most common Credit Card SCAM, in all of its different forms, is called an “ADVANCE FEE LOAD SCAM”. Typically, you will find these in the classified section of your local newspapers and trade magazines, and unfortunately, you’ll also see them floating around the internet.
- In a nutshell, the perpetrator will guarantee you a loan, but you have to pay them an upfront fee first. The fee can range from $100 to several hundred dollars. The charges can be extracted using telephone services like 1-900 numbers. Beware of courier services, and transactions that avoid the US Postal service, often conducted so as to avoid detection. The scam is that once the fake company has your money, they disappear from the planet, leaving you a victim of their con. You are out money, and no credit card.
- Now lets’ not confuse Advance Fee Load Scam artists with legitimate lenders and institutions. I can attest that there are real companies out there, trying to help you to get the credit, loans, and consumer debt services that you need. I believe in many of these services, and I believe in the convenience and power of the internet. However, use your common sense in all your business transactions in life, and that includes credit. Never give someone money without getting anything back in return. Never trust someone that you don’t know. Never get enticed into a deal that’s too good to be true.
Use your common sense, and don’t fall prey to the con artists slight of hand, such as the Advance Fee Load Scam…
4. ANNUAL FEES, INTEREST RATES, ETC.:
Credit Card Scams come in all different shapes and sizes. Many of them are, arguably, not scams at all, but let’s just call them credit card offers involving consumer unfriendly terms.
- Read the fine-line. Every Credit Card Offer must provide the Consumer with written documentation on the terms of the offer.
- Check the Annual Fee, the Interest Rates, the Cash Advance Fees, the Late Fees, and all other terms of the offer.
c) Make sure you know what you are getting. Some offers are for secured cards, some are for unsecured cards, and some offers are for shopping portals online and offline (Like a department store card). So, while none of these are scams, by definition, it is important that you fully understand the terms of the credit card offer that you are agreeing to.
Be a responsible consumer, and read the terms and conditions of your credit card offer…
5. THE UNITED STATES FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION::
The best place to go for direct consumer information, protection, and remedy, is the United States Federal Trade Commission…
The FTC is there to help…
SUMMARY:
Use the No-Call Registry to cut down telephone solicitations in your home and places of business. While many legitimate lenders utilize telemarketing, be careful. Don’t give out personal information to people you don’t know, don’t pay up-front processing fees over the phone, and get everything in writing. Consider yourself an advised consumer on “Advanced Fee Load” Scams, and look out for the signs, when these scams regrettably make their way to you. Read the terms of the offers that you are considering, and utilize the FTC website for trusted information, resources, and all related materials on consumer credit card issues.
We’ve enjoyed providing this information to you, and we wish you the best of luck in your pursuits. Remember to always seek out good advice from those you trust, and never turn your back on your own common sense.

Self Control
July 9th, 2008
Self control means the ability to motivate ourselves to do the things we need to do. It also means stopping ourselves from doing things that we see are bad for us. It may seem that it is a problem of willpower, but pushing ourselves to do things when we feel miserable, or fighting temtation may just be a recipe for stress. There are better ways.
Self Control With Easy Steps
One trick to doing what you need to do is to start using what motivation you have. If you really feel stressed when you think about doing your tax return, for example, just put it out where you can work on it later. That’s a start. Later, you might just do one form. If you think about it, whatever the task, you can usually find enough motivation for some small step. Take that step as soon as you think of it, and the next steps become easier.
Another trick is to create motivation. Find ways to energize yourself. Willpower tends to go up and down with energy levels. Sleep well, play energetic music, move around, or start an interesting conversation. When you find the things that work for you, keep a list handy to use as necessary.
Self Control Through Self Awareness
Maybe that piece of cake calls to you. Isn’t it sometimes hard to resist temptation? Stronger willpower is a nice idea, but a simpler solution is to stop standing in front of the cake! Stop looking at it too. Don’t go to the bar alone if you want a faithful marriage. Don’t have whiskey in the house if you don’t want to drink it. Stay away from people that lead you to trouble.
Don’t buy into the idea that self control means being immune to temptation. True self control is not the willpower to say no, but the wisdom to avoid temptation. Be aware of where your resistance is low, and don’t put yourself in those situations. Doesn’t that make more sense than fighting useless battles with yourself?
Of course there will be times when you didn’t choose the situation you are in, or at least that’s the excuse you’ll use. What can you do to be ready for the temptations that come up unexpectedly. Here are a few tips.
1. Ask people for help. If you can’t stop complaining, for example, have friends point out when you are doing it.
2. Use substitutes. If you shouldn’t drink that beer, quickly get a glass of your favorite juice or soda. For best results, have substitutes in mind that give you some real pleasure.
3. Imagine the consequences of your actions. Do this imediately when you are tempted, and be vivid in your imaginings. Give yourself a good scare, if you have to.
4. Try to relax. Willpower is low when you are stressed. Close your eyes and take three deep breaths.
5. Discover some of the causes of your temptations, and deal with them. For some people, boredom can lead to all sorts of stupid ways to find “excitement,” for example. Involvement in something productive and intereasting can make the temptations disappear. Find some of the underlying causes, and change what you can change.
“Strengthening” willpower by fighting your feelings is a losing battle. It is more effective to learn about yourself. How are you motivated? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Learn, and use what you learn to make the behavior you want easy. That’s the key to self control.

Do we agree that life is a struggle? It’s kind of fun if you have a sense of humor, but you have to be serious about estate planning. Estate planning simply means doing your best to preserve the wealth and assets you accumulate during your lifetime.
For those who have even a modest estate a living trust may be your first line of defense. An attorney can prepare one for a reasonable fee, or you can buy a guide and do it yourself.
Living trusts are easy to understand and easy to create if you will spend two or three hours reading instructions and preparing the needed forms and documents. A living trust is really just a legal basket into which you put all your assets to protect them from probate. The trust gives you a chance to pass your wealth on to those you choose. In probate a court makes those decisions.
Are there alternatives to a living trust? Yes, many. We will cover a couple of the simple ones.
The most common alternative is the joint titling of assets. If you want your house to pass to your daughter you put both your name and her name on title as joint tenants with right of survivorship. When you die the house passes to your daughter and avoids probate. You can do the same with bank accounts, brokerage accounts and cars.
Joint titling is easy, but dangerous. If your daughter has legal problems the assets with joint title become fair game for lawsuits. Another drawback is that joint titling is irrevocable. If things should turn nasty between you and your daughter, tough luck. You are stuck with her as a joint owner of your assets. There are also some tax consideration which might not be beneficial. Talk to your tax advisor.
Here’s a good one…the beneficiary deed. They are not yet allowed in all states, but it should be considered if they are legal where you own property. A beneficiary deed simply states who is entitled to the property upon your death. It is entirely revocable during your lifetime.
Bank accounts and brokerage accounts can contain a transfer-on-death designation. This is super, because the designation is entirely revocable during your lifetime. Transfer-on-death simply states who is entitled to the contents of the account upon your death. It avoids the risks associated with joint tenancies. You could name one beneficiary or any number and even what portion of the asset each should receive.
An estate planning attorney will have lots of other solutions to your more complicated estate needs.
I use a very basic plan. I have my $142 dollars in an old soup can buried in the back yard. Oops! Don’t show this to the IRS.
