It’s The Ride That Counts

April 28th, 2008

Having goals is a good thing. It means that you’re willing to take the first step to achieving those goals. When you write down your goals, articulate them on paper, that’s the first step to achieving them.

But what about the second step, the third and the fourth and so on? If you persevere and keep focused you will eventually reach the goals that you set for yourself. But when you finally reach that goal, how will you feel about it?

Will it be a sense of accomplishment and pride? Or will it be more of ‘yeah I finally got it done’ and you’re just happy that you’ve gotten it over with?

The route you take while pursuing your goal determines how you feel about it at the end. It’s the ride that counts. Have you been on a road trip where everything that could go wrong did? How did you feel when you finally got to your destination? Pretty worn out, huh? Now what about a good road trip where everything went smoothly? You were probably still tired depending on how long the trip was but you were a bit happier when you got there.

See, it’s how you get there that counts. If you’re miserable during the entire trip, you’re going to be miserable when you get to where you’re going. I’ve had too many road trips where everyone in the car was cranky during the entire ride and as soon as we got to our last stop, the crankiness only continued on. Sure we were glad to get there but only because we were finally there and able to get out of the car. We were just glad the trip was over and still quite a bit cranky too.

But when the road trip is smooth and fun with no accidents or construction or any mishaps, not only are you happy during the ride but you’re ecstatic when you get to your final stop. You’re not as tired and worn out as you would have been if it were a bad trip.

It’s the same thing with your goals. You’re more appreciative of achieving your goals if you have fun with it while you’re working on it. So enjoy the ride, have fun and there will be a lot more satisfaction when you reach your goals.

QUESTION: I’m a part-time “hobby” seller of used books on Amazon and eBay. Do I need to pay income tax on the sales I had last year?

ANSWER: Yes, you are required to pay federal income tax and self-employment tax on your net income from selling used books online, whether you sold them on Amazon, eBay, Half.com, ABE, Alibris, or any other venue.

Since you don’t have an employer reporting your bookselling income and withholding a portion for taxes, you must inform the IRS about it yourself. It makes no difference that you consider your bookselling a “hobby.” If you’re making a profit, the IRS considers it a business, and wants its cut.

I’m assuming you won’t be incorporating your business, so you’ll need to report your bookselling income as a “sole proprietorship” on the long tax form, IRS Form 1040, Schedule C, “Profit or Loss From Business.”

You can report your self-employed income using the personal editions of TurboTax or TaxCut software. These programs can save you lots of time, since they give instructions in plain English instead of the bewildering jargon of IRS instruction manuals.

If you made a profit during 2005 from bookselling, you’ll also owe some state income tax for that, so I’d also recommend you also use the state version of TurboTax or TaxCut to figure your state tax obligation.

To complete your tax return, you’ll need to account for every transaction involving your book business. If you’re not already doing so, keep all your receipts and records, and put your expenses into categories such as “postage,” “shipping supplies,” “books,” and so on. This is the information that will go on your Schedule C.

Next year, don’t wait this long to get your affairs in order. With self-employed income, you’re supposed to estimate your tax obligation during the year, and make quarterly payments on your profits, submitted with Form 1040-ES, by April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the following calendar year. Since you didn’t do this during 2005, you may owe a penalty for late tax payments. If you were expecting a tax refund this year, it may be smaller than you thought.

For next year, I’d recommend you have a separate checking account to track expenses and income from your bookselling. If your bank enables you to download your transactions into Quicken or another personal-finance program, you can automatically categorize expenses such as “postage,” etc., in Quicken. And next year you can transfer this same data into your tax-prep software. This will greatly lessen your bookeeping chores next year, and also give you a handy tool for examining the performance of your book business.

Fortunate are those who have a Dream and if you happen to be one of those who has an Internet Home Based Business Dream then don’t let it lie dormant and ultimately disappear from the realms of reality. Start activating your Dream and lay the foundations to make your Dream come true and establish yourself as an Internet Marketer.

“To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe”–Anatole France.

Today’s lifestyle keeps every moment of your life involved in activities both productive and unproductive that dreaming has become a luxury. Dreaming is not the preserve of the rich and the mighty and in fact you are on a level playing field. It is when you try to make your dream a reality that you find that the levels are not the same. The wealth and experience of your competitors are factors that you have to contend with. Take courage from the fact that they too were just like you a few years ago. It is their Passion and Commitment that has taken them to where they are. It is now your turn to play the game like your predecessors and achieve your goal.

Stay focused on your Internet Home Based Business Dream and work with Passion, Commitment, Persistence and Dedication. Do not vacillate, work with determination and motivate yourself to achieve success. Frustrations and disappointments will be part of the scenario especially at the early stages but keep in mind that for you, failure is no option.

Dissociate from people who are negative thinkers. They will sabotage your dream, discourage and drown you in a sea of fear and failure. The investment involved in starting your Internet Home Based Business is so small compared to that of a brick and mortar business that the question of risk or failure should not in anyway dampen your enthusiasm.

Acquiring knowledge is one aspect of the strategy to succeed. Read articles relevant to your field. There are excellent article directories in the internet that have articles written by experts on a vast range of topics. Visit Google and search for “Article Submission Sites”. These articles can guide, inspire and motivate you to achieve your goal.

An easy and quick way of starting a Free Home Based Business is to become an Affiliate of one of the popular affiliate programs that fit into your scheme of things. There are several leading Affiliate Program providers such as Clickbank, Commission Junction, Link Share and ClixGalore who provide a whole range of Affiliate Programs to choose from. In addition to this there are several Affiliate Programs promoted by leading individual organizations such as the famous Amazon.com and Strong Future International. Many of these Affiliate Programs provide their affiliates with Free Tools, Tips and even Websites to get started. Having your own personal website will definitely be advantageous.

Managing your time is another important aspect. Allocate about two hours a day for your dream business. You might have to sacrifice watching some of your favorite TV programs and perhaps some social activities. Success, Fame and Glory does not come easily. There is no substitute for hard and dedicated work. Do not swallow the bait of “Get Rich Quick” scheme advertisements that flood the internet promising thousands of dollars overnight! Ignore them and focus on your objective.

The help and advice of a knowledgeable friend or that of a Mentor can certainly hasten your progress towards the achievement of your objective.

Associate yourself with people who have a positive outlook of life. Get close to dreamers who have made their dreams a reality. These are the people who can inspire you to achieve your dream and make it happen. Believe in yourself. Believe in your Dream. Activate your Internet Home Based Business Dream now and make your dream a reality.

International travel is easier today than it has ever been,
given enough money and time. Trouble is, most of us have a hard
time saving the money, and once we have that together we
struggle to find the time. It seems that only wealthy retired
people have enough of both to travel extensively.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could afford to travel while we are
young and unfettered? Sure, some people in their 20’s take
backpacking trips, but that type of travel isn’t for everyone.
What happens if you get sick in the Middle East, or run out of
money in Timbuktu? Being sick or broke in a foreign country can
be a scary and dangerous experience.

Guess what? There is a better way to see the world for extended
periods of time without spending any money. You have to work,
but you’ll be working in the playgrounds of the gods, and you
get paid very handsomely for being there.

There are a variety of paid travelers out there and others who
travel free. In addition, Since September 11, 2001 there has
been an increase in the number of people wanting to volunteer
their time. If you prefer to “give something back” while you
travel, here are some websites with information:

AmeriCorps - www.americorps.org Catholic Network of
Volunteer Service - www.cnvs.org Habitat for Humanity -
www.habitat.org Sierra Club - www.sierraclub.org St. Vincent
Pallotti Center - www.pallotticenter.org

You may also wish to contact the International Association for
Air Travel Couriers at: Tel: (352) 475-1584, www.courier.org.
Truly enterprising folks might be able to get some “free” air
travel in on the way to finding a paid travel related job.

This article is directed at a much more specific target. It is
intended to introduce you to the idea of working aboard private
yachts. Here are a few considerations to keep in mind:

You don’t need a college degree to get started. You don’t
have to join any clubs. You have the chance to see the world.
You will meet some of the wealthiest and most famous people in
the world. You will learn invaluable people skills. You will
learn numerous practical maintenance skills. Entry-level
positions often earn enough money to save $20,000 per year!
Charter yacht crews earn fantastic tips in addition to salary.
There is no overhead; no rent, no bills, uniforms and meals are
provided. Your earnings are largely tax-free. Most yachts
give four weeks paid vacation. Not a lot of people know about
this industry, therefore there are never enough good people to
fill the available positions. The trend among cruising yachts
today is toward larger and more luxurious boats, therefore more
crew positions are opening up all the time as brand new
mega-yachts leave the yards where they were built.

Don’t worry about whether or not you have enough boating
experience to do the job. You will learn most of the skills you
need on the job, and “The Yachtie Bible: How to Get Paid While
Traveling in Style”, (available at
http://www.booklocker.com/books/842.html), will show you how to
get the training and experience you need to secure your first
job. After that, if you enjoy the work, and you get along well
with your employers and crewmates, you can work your way up the
pay scale rapidly.

Before you say, “I couldn’t do that, I get seasick,” you need to
know that everybody gets seasick. “The Yachtie Bible” looks at
various remedies you can use until you get your “sea legs.” The
important thing is to start working, which means:

Getting to a place where there are yachts, Getting to know
other people working on yachts, Convincing those other people
that you are willing to work, and to learn, Satisfying minimum
sea safety requirements by taking an STCW- 95 Basic Safety
course. (We’ll cover the what, where and how of this shortly.)

The yachting community is very friendly and you will be amazed
to discover how small the world really is once you begin to
travel.

Yachting is a brilliant way to jump-start your life. Give it a
try!

time. But you can learn how to take advantage of them when you
encounter the best opportunities for going long or for shorting
them to make money when they are poised to fall down.

Microsoft Great Plains, Great Plains Software eEnterprise and Dynamics needs to know the key questions for Microsoft Dynamics GP version upgrade. Especially, when Great Plains is heavily customized and integrated with other parts of ERP/MRP/CRM and legacy systems. When you have relatively old (3-4 years old) Great Plains system in production, you need to resolve not just version upgrade, but probably database platform and server and WS hardware revision to name a few questions

• MS SQL Server 2005. The best final of your upgrade project should include MS SQL 2005. Microsoft Dynamics GP 9.0 (10.0 is coming in late 2006). There is special MS SQL moving procedure, however in our opinion it should be done by Microsoft Business Solutions / Microsoft Dynamics partner

• Upgrade Path. Microsoft Business Solutions suggests version upgrade passes, this is important to know when you are on old version, such as 6.0, 5.0 or earlier

• Annual Enhancement Program. This is sometimes surprising for customers who stopped annual payment and now has to be re-enrolled (with some penalty) into annual enhancement program. You should pick new VAR or contact your old VAR and arrange payment and re-enrollment through them. When you are back on annual support - you will have registration key for new version

• Dexterity Customization. You should have DYNAMICS.DIC with customization code (or sometimes dexterity developer provide you with EXTRACT.DIC, having the same code, forms, and other custom object)

• Onsite Upgrade. MBS Partner with local representation, of if you are large company - nation-wide partner could send consultants onsite. However be sure that onsite visit is more expensive option

• Remote upgrade, installation and going live with the help of your IT team is preferable. If you are in other US, Australia, New Zealand or European location - MBS partner does upgrade via remote desktop, VPN connections plus web sessions

• Reports Upgrade. ReportWriter reports has the list of reports which needs to be re-designed with new version, due to the fact of original report redesign by MS Dynamics GP development team in Microsoft. FRx reports are normally easy to upgrade. If you invested in Crystal Reports - you might consider switch to MS SQL Server reporting services, but Crystal will still be OK

• Legacy Databases. The last version, supporting Pervasive SQL and Ctree was Microsoft Great Plains 7.5. You need to migrate to MS SQL Server, which is relatively easy to do, but it should be done by consultant

• Third Party upgrades. If you use Horizon Manufacturing, Wenn Soft Job Cost, Mekorma, Trinity, DynamicsZip, Avalara Tax or other third party - please check on third party version availability.

Lorna Ramsay and her husband, David, live in Scotland and run
the TOP-SET® Incident Investigation System (
http://www.TOP-SET.com ). They teach how to investigate
industrial accidents all over the world, for high-hazard
industries as well as the emergency services and the medical
sector.

They and the TOP-SET® team also go into the field to investigate
for clients all over the world, and teach engineers who work in
nuclear plants, the oil and gas, explosives and other high
hazard industries, how to stay safe by using their intuition.

The most rewarding outcome of their work is the companies find
that being humanitarian affects their bottom line. What they
learn through TOP-SET® saves lives, increases business
performance, enhances the company’s reputation, increases
profitability, complies with regulation, and prevents and
predicts similar occurrences. And it also affects employee
morale and attitude.

“When an employer sends his or her managers to our seminars,”
says Lorna, “they know the company cares about them. What we
teach - and we’re educators, not trainers - spills over in other
areas of the workplace. TOP-SET® is a ‘thinking system.’ We
teach our clients to investigate, i.e., to think their way
through what is really a complex problem. We’re
‘problem-solvers.’ And once you can analyze what happened, and
learn from it, you can prevent and eventually predict.”

HOW DO THEY TEACH INTUITION?

“Go back to when you were in an unfamiliar situation,” says
Lorna. “Think of how a dog or child behaves. When my dog runs
down to the beach in the morning and sees a rubbish bag, she’ll
sniff, circle it, even bare her teeth until she’s sure it’s
safe. Well that’s what these engineers need to learn how to do,
to ’sense’ when something has changed.”

“When you’re working in a high-hazard industry,” she says, “if
you go into a work situation, and there’s something coming at
you that makes you feel funny - an almost imperceptible smell, a
feeling, in an explosive factory it could be a change in
humidity - just some change that you sense, rather than see,
don’t ignore it. If you get a gut feeling something isn’t right,
pay attention to that, act on that. Intuition can be honed by
just practicing and noticing.”

CHANGE PROFICIENCY

“We help companies move forward and innovate in a time of
perpetual change; TOP-SET® is specifically a thinking system, a
key to investigating accidents, to solving that particular type
of problem. But the companies often ask us to assist them in
thinking their way through other issues, to help them create,
and to innovate.” Lorna says. “We’ve found when a company is
honestly investigating an incident, and the regulatory bodies
are aware of that, then they’re less likely to prosecute. The
most important thing, though, is that employees feel valued and
cared about when such attention is paid to their safety. And it
works. It’s now safer to be on an oil rig than in your own home.”

A practical application for emotional intelligence with many
positive outcomes.

Is your life less than perfect? Are you feeling stuck in your
daily routine? Have you ever looked at a friend or colleague and
thought, “Wow, she has it together. What’s her secret?”

Every woman has 10 feminine forces but most rely on only 2 or 3
to get through their day. By adding 1 or 2 new strengths they’ll
realize exponential gains, but the real secret weapon is using
all of them. Harnessing her 10 strengths is the healthiest way a
woman will achieve the career and life she craves.

These 10 strengths will lead you on a discovery that will
surprise, delight and transport you to new levels of personal
and professional growth.

The following are three of 10 strengths women need to embrace:

1. Genius -The secret to a woman’s genius is collaboration.
Instead of solving problems in isolation, we naturally evolved
to connect and collaborate. The success that comes from this
process provides sanity, support and a smarter solution. So
despite how busy we are, women have to make collaboration a
priority.

I watched a group of male CEOs compete with their homemaker
wives at a brain game. The men lost miserably because they
failed to collaborate. They were so surprised that they demanded
a rematch the following night-which they lost too! Naturally,
the women pooled their resources and won again.

2. Engagement - My motto is women CAN do anything–not women
SHOULD do everything. This is the greatest dilemma women face.
If you want a career and a happy family life you’re going to
have to learn to say “NO.” Women need to set their own
expectations for what they want to accomplish, stop being
commitment queens and shed the guilt. It’s okay to admit that
you can’t handle ALL the laundry, ALL the housework and ALL the
carpools. Your husband and kids will have to chip in and help.
You may have to say “NO” to the school fundraiser and any other
cause that distracts you from your goal.

3. Enterprise - Women may not realize it but they’re already
CEOs. They manage the finance, commissary, transportation and
janitorial detail. They are pros at running their family like a
business. It’s time they start acting like a CEO in all aspects
of their lives. CEOs expect a payoff for every business venture.
So, when women take on new ventures or choose how to spend their
time, they should ask “What’s the payoff?” Is it monetary? Is it
good for my spirit? Will it help my position at work or at home?
The profit need not be in cash but there needs to be a payoff.

Whether positioning yourself for a promotion, pursuing a life
goal or simply figuring out what you want to be when you grow
up, the 10 feminine strengths I reveal are Inside Every Woman
and when harnessed will help you achieve lasting success and
fulfillment.

Success Is Inside!
